This Friday . . .

This Friday, our speaker will be John Lohmeyer, with the Kansas City Chiefs Ambassadors.

John Lohmeyer was a four-year letter winner for Emporia State and was team captain in 1972, being named to the NAIA District 10 and GPAC all-conference first teams and leading the Hornets to the GPAC title and a third-place ranking in the NAIA poll. Following his time at ESU, Lohmeyer was drafted in the fourth round by the Chiefs and played four seasons as a defensive lineman, starting 15 games and serving as special teams captain.

Rotary Matters
SMNW Interact Club
The Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club will be going on a trip to Puerto Rico from June 26-July 2, 2023.  They are doing this with our friend and fellow Rotarian, Jorge Coromac and Woodland Charities.  The Club will meet up with the local Interact Club in Puerto Rico and they will also be distributing water filters to the local community.

They are in the process of raising money for this trip and they have requested a grant from the Lenexa Rotary Foundation.  In addition to this grant, they had a restaurant fundraiser last Friday and they are thinking of many other ways to raise money.

As you know, this Interact club was resurrected and has only been meeting for a few months.  It is very impressive that they organized the club and had many activities in such a short amount of time.  Lenexa Rotary started this club many years ago and because of Covid, the club members graduated and did not carry one.  A HUGE thanks to the teacher sponsor, Kathy Clark, for helping get this club going again.

A few weeks ago, Lenexa Rotary Foundation President, Christopher Coleman, said that any members who would like to donate to the SMNW Interact for this trip, they can do so by making a donation to the Lenexa Rotary Foundation.  When you make out a check, please write "Interact" on the memo line.  Please seriously consider donating to this energetic group of Interactors.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Christopher Coleman, Greg Peterson or Amy Ruo.

Occupation (or former): Retired banker (30 days)
Formerly the Chief Lending Officer for a $900 Million commercial bank in Johnson County, Kansas

Tell us about your family:
I have been divorced for 25 years and never re-married.
I have 3 grown children, Ryan, Sean & Kelly
Ryan owns his own commercial construction company with partners in Johnson County.  He has two children Jack (6) and Nora (3).  I am already keeping quite busy following their activities.  Sean is a land broker in Hutchinson, KS specializing in recreational sporting properties (deer & waterfowl hunting). He lives with his wife Betsy (a RN) on a little farm outside Hutch and hasn’t started a family yet.  Kelly is my youngest and is the General Manager of a pet store in Overland Park.  She loves animals and has 3 cats (could be the reason she’s not married?)

When did you join Rotary:  I joined when Kelly was 4 years old so probably 26+ years ago.  I was invited to join by Marshall Rimann and am very blessed to call him my friend all these years.

Why did you join Rotary: Being a banker, I was already involved with the Chamber of Commerce, on the Parks & Recreation Board, etc…..but was looking for something more hands-on in terms of giving back to the Lenexa community.  I really love Lenexa!

What Rotary offices have you held: I’ve been the Treasurer for the Club for the last 6 years and am a current Board member.

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project? Marshall Rimann, John Foster, Gene Amos & Charlie Smith approached me early in my 1st Rotary year about ShrimpFest and helping cook shrimp.  It’s frankly become “my thing” and a labor of love for me every year in March.

When you are not working, how do you spend your time? I am very active in my church (Holy Trinity Parish) in both ministry roles and helping with projects.  Since I retired I became the grass-mower for our large campus.  I enjoy mowing because unlike banking, you can finish a job in just a few hours.

Recreationally, I thoroughly enjoy shooting sporting clays with my buddy and fellow Rotarianm, Moe Cougher.  My employer gave me a very nice bicycle as a retirement gift.  I’m really out of shape but am enjoying getting back into bicycling.  Just wish the wind would stop blowing!

I’ve played the guitar for 50 years but never learned to read music.  I’ve just started taking guitar lessons from a very patient professor at UMKC.  He thinks I will likely master the guitar in the next 10 years.  Ouch!
