Our speaker this Friday will be Bill Severns, baseball player, coach and author of Keepers of the Sandlot, a book that encourages parents and coaches to enjoy their kids in their developmental years of little league, including life lessons based on his experience at every level of the game. While playing baseball was his passion, coaching his kids proved to be even more rewarding and challenging, thus, he urges parents and coaches to make their kids’ childhood fun and shape their lives to also play the game of life the way it should be played.

Our Youth Exchange Student

Meet our new Rotary Youth Exchange student from Italy - Noemi Sammarco

It looks like Noemi is already making friends at Shawnee Mission Northwest!

We look forward to getting to know Noemi!
Book Drive

Our Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears, is starting a Book Drive to benefit the Learn to Read program, whose representatives spoke at our Club several weeks ago.

The drive will run through October. Fred will have a collection bucket at our upcoming meetings for new or gently used books.  Information sheets with a preferred book list will be available on the tables at this week's meeting. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution to purchase books, donations will also be accepted that way.  Thank you for your support.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

October will mark the start of the Lenexa Fire Department's Fire Safety Trailer visits at Lenexa-area elementary schools in honor of Fire Safety Month.

We assist the firefighters as they take 3rd graders (fire safety) and 5th graders (severe weather) through the trailer in 30-minute slots. The firefighters do all the talking and crowd control; Rotarians simply support them from a little control room by answering faux 911 calls, operating the smoke machine, etc, and resetting "fire hazards" between classes. There isn't much for us to do for the severe weather presentations.

To help me more efficiently organize trailer volunteers, Amy Ruo has created an Online Sign-Up with the preliminary schedule of volunteer slots (it includes the school, date, and a roughly 9-11:30am shift and 11:30am-2pm shift), available at:

As we get closer to October and schools finalize the actual class schedules, Ashley Sherard will provide more detailed schedules for each school visit.

Rotarian Spotlight

Doug Gorham
What is/was your job or profession?
I retired after 25 years with the State of Florida and moved to Kansas City. I have a degree in Mortuary Science and worked for 13 years as a Funeral Director for the Amos Family Funeral Home and Crematory

What is your favorite sports team(s) and why?
Of course, the Chiefs and the Royals. I used to be a Dolphins fan, but when you move to new city, you need to change your allegiance to the local teams!

What is your favorite vacation destination, and why?
Since retiring, we have taken several cruises abroad and I find it very difficult to narrow the answer to a single location. I would put Scandinavia and the Baltic countries high on the list

What is your ideal sandwich?
Nothing better than a good ole BLT

If you are at a trivia night, what category would you know most about?
60’s and 70’ rock music!
