Local artist combines passion for art and military history | FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV | News, Weather, Sports

This Friday, our speaker will be Kerm Dyer.  Kerm began painting watercolors when he retired and his passion is painting World War II military aircraft.  He especially likes to talk to those who flew in the aircraft and to hear their stories.  It gives him the opportunity to see just how brave the young men were and the great responsibilities they were given when many were not much more than teenagers.

How did he get started painting airplanes?  One day he decided to do a painting of a B-17 Flying Fortress to hang in his office.  As a young boy during World War II, he was inspired by all of the deeds of our military and was especially drawn to those who flew.

SMNW Interact Club
Greg Peterson and Amy Ruo have been attending weekly Interact meetings.  They are very happy with how the Interact Club has planned so much in such a short amount of time.  Their teacher sponsor, Kathy Clark, has been a big help along with the student leadership.  Here are some things that are happening:

- Service project at an orchard with Jorge Coromac on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd.  (see below)  All Rotarians are welcome!

- Jorge Coromac and Natalie Zimmerman spoke at Wednesday's meeting.  Natalie was an Interact member at SMNW and went on two trips to Guatemala with Jorge and Woodland Charities

- They hope to go on a summer trip to Puerto Rico with Woodland Charities and are thinking of ways to raise money for the trip.  All donations are welcome!

- Lenexa Rotary is sponsoring two students to attend RYLA in June at the University of Kansas.  Shawnee Rotary has also agreed to sponsor one of our SMNW Interact Students to attend.  Thank you Shawnee Rotary!

Do you have any old issues of The Rotarian magazine lying around?  Bring them to Rotary on Friday!  We want to give the Interact Club members past issues of The Rotarian magazine.  Place them on the sign-in table or give to Greg Peterson or Amy Ruo.

Polio World Immunization Week

IMAGINE” A WORLD WITHOUT POLIO!
GET READY TO CELEBRATE & DONATE
WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK ~ APRIL 24-30

During World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, join Rotarians around the World in advocating for polio eradication and the importance of vaccines. As one of the greatest advances of modern medicine, vaccines are safe, effective, and save millions of lives each year. Our progress in the fight to end polio is proof that vaccines work. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative estimates that the polio vaccine has saved more than 20 million children around the world from paralysis. However, approximately 12.5 million children are totally unvaccinated. They are known as Zero-Dose Children and vaccinating them is critical to stopping polio for good.

We need to continue vaccinating the world’s children against polio, because polio anywhere is a threat everywhere.
Congrats to Steve Nettles!

Congratulations to Lenexa Rotarian, Steve Nettles who has been chosen as Chair of the Anti-Human Trafficking Committee for District 5710 starting in July 2023
