Fire Safety Trailer-VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Lenexa Fire Department contacted us with the schedule for their Fire Safety Trailer visits at Lenexa-area elementary schools in honor of Fire Safety Month.  They apologized for the short notice, but the first visits begin next week so the need for volunteers is urgent.  If you want to sign up for a slot (or three), please respond to Ashley Sherard as soon as possible and she will keep the master schedule.

Many of you have volunteered before and know the drill. For those that haven't, we assist the firefighters as they take 3rd graders (fire safety) and 5th graders (severe weather) through the trailer in 30-minute slots. The firefighters do all the talking and crowd control; Rotarians simply support them from a little control room by answering faux 911 calls, operating the smoke machine, etc., and resetting "fire hazards" between classes. There isn't much for us to do for the severe weather presentations. Either the volunteer before you or the firefighters can show you what to do.

Flourish Furniture

Flourish is the community's connection between need and abundance.  It is as simple as that.  They operate on the notion that there truly is enough for everyone. It takes a community commitment and a mechanism for connection, which Flourish provides.

Over the summer, they have been blessed with an overflowing warehouse and had to borrow extra storage space for awhile.  Summer is the time to clean out closets, for kids to move home from college, for families to move before a new school year starts, and a time for garage sales!  Flourish offers a place for all items seeking a new home.

At Flourish, donors can rest assured that items are going directly into families' homes, sometimes the same day they receive it.  As they settle into fall, they typically see a temporary dip in donations.  While they have regular corporate sources for furniture donations and continue our home pickup program, they tend to run low on specific items during slower donation times.  It is during this time, and leading into the holidays, that they call on our supporters to coordinate donation drives in our community.  The items of greatest need are new bed pillows, large pots and pans, bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, queen size bedding, small kitchen appliances, vacuums, and lamp shades.  We also always need flat screen televisions.  Reach out at info@flourishfurniturebank.org for more information

PolioPlus Society

Several members asked about the Polio Plus Society form after Jim Arnett spoke at last Friday's  meeting.  See application below.  P.S.  ==>  check the fine print.. one does not have to be a Rotarian to be a Polio Plus Society Member... so spread the news accordingly

Thank you for your support
