This Friday . . .

Our speakers this week will be Ward Cook and Jeff Penfield with the USS Kansas City Commissioning Committee.

While Kansas City is considered the very heart of the heartland, there is an effort underway that intrinsically connects our town to the open sea. Private citizens from a variety of backgrounds have been working in conjunction with the U.S. Navy to commission the USS Kansas City. It will be the second ship to carry this name and the spirit of our town across seas worldwide Creating this partnership with the United States Navy is the top priority for the volunteers supporting this effort.

“This will be an accomplishment of Greater Kansas City,” says Ward Cook, executive director of the commissioning committee. “Not Kansas City, Missouri. Not Kansas City, Kansas. All of Kansas City. Together.”

This sense of solidarity and community runs deep through this project. The USS Kansas City was recently christened in Mobile, Alabama, where she was built by Austral USA. Now, a group of Kansas Citians have come together to volunteer to serve on a commissioning committee to raise community and financial support in order to enhance the experience for the young men and women who will serve on board.

The new USS Kansas City will be a state-of-the-art Littoral Combat Ship deployed by the U.S. Navy to keep shipping lanes open to guarantee free trade, deter aggression and keep our shores safe, and to participate in wars, when necessary.

Last Friday we inducted a new member into Lenexa Rotary.

Orientation Session-Sept. 9th
CHANGE OF DATE!

Bottle #12 Orientation Get together - Calling all Lenexa Rotary Club members, prospective members, friends and family.  While the "Orientation" sessions were created for folks that have been members five or fewer years, there is always something new to learn, remember, or just an opportunity to enjoy each other's company discussing the "bottle" topic.

Bottle #12, pulled by Christopher Coleman, is on the topic of Club Committees and Operations.  How does the club operate?  Who makes the decisions?  What committees are there?  Who puts out these awesome newsletters??

Come by President Lenet's house, 20300 W. 99th St., LenexaSeptember 9th, 7:00-9:00 p.m. and discover what makes your Club run smoothly.  As with each session, a surprise tidbit of information will be revealed!

Women's Rotary Gathering
Becca Coleman and Lenet Compton attended the first of 12 connecting sessions of area women in Rotary.  It was held at the Lenexa Public Market thanks to the host, President Lenet.  Eleven women attended from six different clubs.  These connecting sessions are scheduled every third Thursday of the month from 5:30-6:30 p.m.  The August 15th gathering will be hosted by Jacci Leib, President-Elect of the Ambassador Rotary Club, at Transport Brewery.

Spouse & Significant Other Party
The Spouse and Significant Other party was a small, fun success!  April Boyd-Noronha, Bob Compton, Barb Nettles, Vickie Peterson, Jacci Leib and Marilyn Blaufuss reveled how they met their Rotarian and were free to ask questions about Rotary's programs.  A Lenexa Rotary Club activity calendar for the Rotary year was shared as well as ways they could get involved with club projects.  Finallya prize was given for who matched the most spouse/significant other names to the Rotarian name, and who matched the fewest.  This definitely seemed like an event that should be repeated.

Need a Make-Up?

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:
  • Attend a Club function -- board meeting, committee meeting, project, Youth Exchange
  • Attend a District or International function -- Rotary Youth Exchange, PETs, District Conference
  • Online make-up - Rotary eclub One - go to www.rotaryeclubone.org
  • Attend another Rotary Club meeting
    • While out-of-town for vacation or business
    • In-town around the KC area
    • Download the app "Rotary Club Locator" and find a Rotary club anywhere in the world.
Rotarians can make up for an absence at their club meeting within the same Rotary year.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Make ups also qualify if you attend an eClub meeting.   Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Bill McCollum via email.
