This Friday our speaker will be Mallory Ozier, the Recreation Coordinator at Johnson County Park and Recreation District.
The Johnson County Park & Recreation District was established by state statute in 1953 and is governed by a seven-member Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners appointed by the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners. It comprises more than 10,000 acres and attracts more than 7.5 million visitations annually. The district also provides more than 4,200 fee-supported recreational, cultural, environmental and outdoor education programs each year that generate more than 2.7 million annual participations.
The district operates and maintains 16 developed park areas, including four streamway parks and 87 miles of trails. It also manages a variety of facilities and programming sites throughout the county, including the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, Johnson County Museum, Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, Ernie Miller Nature Center, Theatre in the Park, TimberRidge Adventure Center, Mill Creek Activity Center, the 22-acre Mildale Farm meeting and event site, three sports and recreation complexes, multiple programming sites for senior adults, one early childhood development center, two Natureplay Preschools, and two 18-hole golf courses.
January 11 is National Anti-Human Trafficking Day. It is also the day we will be assembling approximately 60 winter care kits for area victims of human trafficking who are homeless. The assembly location is Countryside Christian Church in the Fellowship Hall (downstairs). Each kit will include: hats, gloves, neck warmers, socks, hoodie, sweat pants, hand warmers, mylar blankets, lip balm, and protein snacks. We will begin assembly at 6 pm and finish no later than 8 pm. If interested please see Steve Nettles.
The DHS Blue Campaign suggests we all wear something BLUE to signify National Anti-Human Trafficking day!
Inspire peace, hope, creativity and community involvement. The Peace Poles Community Art Project is a series of 6-foot-tall wooden poles designed by community members and adorned with original art and messages of peace. The project is returning to Lenexa in 2024, and we invite community members to participate.
Residents, community groups, businesses and artists are encouraged to show their creativity and share messages of peace. All levels of artistic expertise are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Artists have until Jan. 31, 2024, to submit a sketch of their design. A jury committee will then review and invite accepted participants to decorate their pole(s) to be displayed at Black Hoof Park during summer 2024.

Tell us about your family: I am blessed with having my three children and their families in Johnson County. That’s seven grandchildren ages 5-20
When did you join Rotary: August 2023
Why did you join Rotary: I have many friends who belong to Rotary. Through the years, I have admired the volunteer work that Becca Coleman, Greg and Vickie Peterson, and Phil and Jody Hammond have shared with me. I used to be involved in city programs in Lenexa, but gave them up while I was working. Rotary has allowed me to contribute to a worthy cause now that I am retired. Their tenets clearly demonstrate what I want to teach my grandchildren, service above self.

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project? I have always enjoyed the Shrimpfest. Still hoping to win at Bingo someday!
When you are not working, how do you spend your time? I spend as much time as I can with my family. I also love being with friends and playing pickleball and bridge. I am an avid supporter of the arts, especially live theater. I enjoy volunteering at the theater program at JCCC.
