This Friday, our speaker will be Ann Hackett with the Central Exchange and Bloch School at UMKC.

The Central Exchange was founded in 1980 by Marjorie Powell Allen and Beth Smith. There were 160 founding members.  Ann Hackett is the current leader and is also employed with the Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. As she noted of the Central Exchange, “We are focused on helping each of our members and business partners meet their needs and reach their full potential through development, connection, and inspiration.” The organization provides professional and personal advancement through high quality programming and engagement. The Central Exchange has partnered with the Lean In Network Kansas City to offer Lean In Circles, which are safe spaces where women can share their struggles, get advice, and network. The idea is based on Sheryl Sandburg’s book Lean In, which illustrates the importance of women connecting with other women in order to share experiences and offer support. The organization also offers a year-long program in which participants learn leadership development from Denise Mills and Robin Sterneck. Since 2014, the Central Exchange has presented the STEMMy Awards to recognize the achievements of women in those fields.

Anti-Human Trafficking

Seven Rotary and Interact Clubs join together for service project.

Six Rotary clubs -  Leawood, Lenexa, Topeka South, Manhattan, Lawrence, and Community Action Against Human Trafficking, and Topeka High Interact - joined forces and funding to procure supplies and assemble 114 Rotary Cares kits for victims and survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Members of the clubs met on March 24 and 25 to assemble the kits that will be distributed to 6 agencies in District 5710 that serve victims. The agencies that will receive these duffel bags filled with clothing, health and beauty supplies, socks, flip flops, and a journal are: Rended Heart, The Willow, Veronica’s Voice, Project 2 Restore, YWCA Day Center, and The Crisis Center.

If you are available on Friday, March 31 to help with another 60 kits, please join us.  We will work from 2 pm until finished - I hope by 5 or 6, but since we will not be doing prep and set up the day prior, this will take longer.  This project will be at Key Staffing, 5840 SW Huntoon, Topeka.

SMNW Interact Club
Greg Peterson and Amy Ruo have been attending the weekly Interact meetings.  Here are some things they currently have going on:

- They now have an Instagram account - "SMNW-interact.club"

- They are planning a service project at an orchard with Jorge Coromac on Earth Day, April 22nd

- Jorge Coromac and Natalie Zimmerman will be speaking at next Wednesday's meeting.  Natalie was an Interact member and went on a couple of trips with Jorge and Woodland Charities.

- The Interact Club is in the planning stages of going on a summer trip to Ecuador or Puerto Rico with Woodland Charities.

- Lenexa Rotary will be sponsoring two students to attend RYLA in June at the University of Kansas

Do you have any old issues of The Rotarian magazine lying around?  Bring them to Rotary on Friday!  We want to give the Interact Club members past issues of The Rotarian magazine.  Place them on the sign-in table or give to Greg Peterson or Amy Ruo.
