Lenexa Fire Safety Trailer

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Trailer visits start the first week of October

Only 3rd and 5th graders visit the trailer (all other grade-levels receive classroom instruction). Each classroom visits the trailer for 30 minutes, split into two 15-min groups. The firefighters make the presentations and wrangle the kids; we generally don’t have much interaction with students outside of answering a mock 911 call – instead, we act as The Great and Powerful Oz, resetting fire hazards in rooms, flipping switches, running the smoke machine, etc.

We need only one (1) Rotarian per morning and afternoon shift, and Rotarians should plan to arrive 10 min before your shift. Our default volunteer timeslots are 9-11:30am and 11:30am-2pm – but because I have the actual classroom schedules I have adjusted volunteer timeslots for each individual school. You are of course more than welcome to work more than one shift (please do, in fact!), whether back-to-back or on different days.

No prior experience is necessary. You can either drop by another shift for a bit and have that Rotarian show you the ropes, or the LFD is willing to set up training times for any new volunteers, or in a pinch the LFD can show you onsite how to help. So don’t be shy!

Evelyn Hornaday

Occupation (or former):  Episcopal priest, now retired as of January 22, 2023.  I did Intention Interim Ministry (transition specialist) for 20 years at 10 churches in 7 cities of various sizes - from super small towns (fewer than 7,500 people) to super large cities (several million)

Tell us about your family:  Widowed from David Hornaday.  Son, Jeremy, my only child, also died.  My family now consists of a sister and lots of cousins who live all over the country.

When did you join Rotary:  November 2000 in Springfield, Missouri.  Have been a member (or a permanent visitor) in 6 different clubs.

Why did you join Rotary:  I joined Rotary because of its reputation of being an organization of people who believe the world is a better place when caring people are joined together to make that happen.  The fact that so many in my family whom I admired were also Rotarians didn't hurt!

What Rotary offices have you held: I served on the Rotary International Committee, and also Program Chair of the Lenexa Club in 2014.  I like being available to help where needed on an ad hoc basis.

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project?  Went to United Nationals representing Springfield Club to meet with UN officials and representatives of WHO (World Health Organization) to help create a more visible Rotary presence in the fight against polio.  I stay in Rotary because of the wonderful people who share my sense of fulfillment in helping others have a better life.  I officiated David Huff's funeral in December 2019.  He was surrounded by Rotary friends.

When you are not working, how do you spend your time?  I have recently retired, so I am enjoying that life - at lease for awhile!
