This Friday's Meeting

This Friday Chairman Ed Eilert of the Johnson County Board of Commissioners will be speaking to us about the upcoming tax initiative for the Johnson County Courthouse.

Voters will be asked whether the sales tax should be increased by a quarter of a cent for 10 years to raise money to tear down the existing courthouse in downtown Olathe and replace it with a new building just across Santa Fe Street to the north. The money also would go to build a new lab for autopsies, which are currently done in Kansas City, Kan. The new coroner’s facility would be at 119th Street and Ridgeview Drive in Olathe.

Donate to The Rotary Foundation

Time is running out to donate to The Rotary Foundation for this year!  Lenexa Rotary has been recognized as a "Star Club" for many years.  To become a Star Club, our club needs to average a donation of $100 per member to The Rotary Foundation.  Members that want to make their annual $100 contribution to The Rotary Foundation can do so by either giving a check to Phil Hammond at our meetings or donate online at www.rotary.org.  Phil will bring an updated list of where each member stands as to their next level of Paul Harris Fellow.

Welcome New Member - Charles Earnest

I was born and raised here in Kansas City.  At the age of 17, I graduated high school and enlisted in the United States Marines.  While in the Marines, I married my beautiful wife, Ali.  We both did multiple combat deployments to Afghanistan; going twice myself, and she went three times.  We have a handsome one year old boy, Harlan.  I run an Edward Jones office in Merriam, where we help families create, protect, and transfer wealth.  Helping others and being involved in the community will always be of the utmost importance to myself and my family.

Please welcome Charles to Lenexa Rotary!

Lenexa BBQ/Adopt-A-Spot Opportunity - THIS SATURDAY!

A Message from Jenny Doty, Recreation Director - Lenexa Parks & Recreation

It’s hot out there and our parks staff have been working through it this week to get the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle set-up and ready for a wonderful festival in Lenexa!

I am contacting all of our adopt a spot groups to see if we can recruit some help this weekend at the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle to pick up trash at the end of the event.  Typically it takes our staff several hours to pick up all the trash and debris left behind.  The staff is meticulous and when we leave the park on Saturday evening it is with the intention that besides worn grass and some tent rentals that you wouldn’t be able to tell there was an event in the park the previous day.  With the extended heat this week and expected warm weekend we know that the staff is going to be exhausted.  It would be great to have extra hands to get the park back to normal. I would love to have an army of people to help them get it completed in record time.

We will be cleaning up the event on Saturday, June 25th, starting at approximately 4:30 p.m. and will be done no later than 6:30p.m.  As always I will provide all materials necessary for the clean-up.

If you are able and interested please contact me and I will give you details on where you can park and meet me at the event. If you are unable to attend feel free to still share with your group and they can contact me directly.

Lenexa Rotary Receives RI Presidential Citation

Lenexa Rotary was recognized as achieving the Rotary International Presidential Citation.  There were only three clubs in District 5710 who received this award.

Each year the President of Rotary International sets specific standards for local clubs to achieve to receive this award.  This year the requirements were:

  • Membership development & retention - Grow by at least one member.  Lenexa Rotary has grown by 4 members this year!
  • Foundation giving - Club members donate to The Rotary Foundation.
  • Online tool adoption - Setting goals and reporting detailed club activities online.
  • Humanitarian service - Lenexa Rotary formed the Lenexa Rotary Community Corp for volunteers to support Lenexa Rotary; have a hands-on project with 75% club participation (ShrimpFest); establish a partnership with a corporate entity; and do a joint project with 5 other Rotary clubs (Coats for Kids)
  • New Generations  - sponsor an Interact Club (Shawnee Mission Northwest); send students to RYLA (we are sending 4 students); participate in Rotary Youth Exchange (we hosted one inbound student and sent two students outbound to Italy and Austria)
  • Public Image - Update club website and social media; and update newsletter

CONGRATULATIONS to Lenexa Rotary for achieving this recognition.  It takes the ENTIRE club to accomplish this!
