Our speaker this Friday will be Lindsey Douglas, Deputy Secretary of Transportation for the State of Kansas.  She will be speaking to us about the Highway 69 proposal.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), along with the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) and the City of Overland Park, are conducting an in-depth study of how best to improve public safety, reduce congestion and increase travel time predictability along U.S. 69.

U.S. 69 from 179th Street north to 103rd Street is one of the state’s busiest highways, with heavy congestion peaking during rush hours and at other times.

Previous studies indicate that U.S. 69 congestion will increase significantly in the future, creating slower traffic and longer response times for emergency personnel. Transportation improvements are needed to address congestion and keep the economy moving. These improvements will be identified as part of the U.S. 69 Expansion Project.

Rotary Matters
Feeding Hungry Discussion

Based upon a club member's suggestion, the Board of Directors of the Lenexa Rotary Club discussed the possibility of applying previously collected and unused Meals Funds to assist local charities' efforts to "Feed the Hungry" in our local area. If club members concur, the Meals Account would transfer the funds to the Lenexa Rotary Foundation for selection of appropriate charities and disbursement. At this point our Meals Account can support an amount not to exceed $2,500. I would like to have a discussion with the club on this topic at this coming Friday meeting to evaluate the member's feelings on this. Please try to attend this Friday, or if you can't, please email me your thoughts.

Thanks,
Steve

Beer Can Fundraiser
It's that time of year again!  Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears is handing out beer cans to all members for our annual Beer Can Collection. The process in the past was: 1) drink the beer; 2) clean and dry the can; 3) fill the can with coins, dollar bills or a check; 4) give the can back to Fred.  In the past, we have packaged meals for Rise Against Hunger.

This year is a little different.  The process this year is:  1) drink the beer;  2) write a check (preferably for $50-100); and 3) mail check to:

Need a Make-Up?

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:
  • Attend a Club function -- board meeting, committee meeting, project, Youth Exchange
  • Attend a District or International function -- Rotary Youth Exchange, PETs, District Conference
  • Online make-up - Rotary eclub One - go to www.rotaryeclubone.org
  • Attend another Rotary Club meeting
    • While out-of-town for vacation or business
    • In-town around the KC area
    • Download the app "Rotary Club Locator" and find a Rotary club anywhere in the world.
Rotarians can make up for an absence at their club meeting within the same Rotary year.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Make ups also qualify if you attend an eClub meeting.   Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Bill McCollum via email.
