The Board of Directors recently voted to update our scholarship contest to provide $6,000 in scholarship money to a graduating senior from the Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club, matching our funding levels from prior years.
We are currently looking to form a committee and establish a committee chair for this effort. While the Board has outlined a few initial suggestions, no final decisions have been made yet.
If you are interested in joining the committee or serving as chair, please contact President Kevin Day.
Each year, Lenexa Rotary raises money by staffing drink tents at three major festivals: the Lenexa Art Fair, the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, and the Lenexa Chili Challenge.
Phil Hammond has been the overall chair for these events for many years, managing volunteer coordination, purchasing beer, wine, and soda, and liaising with the Johnson County Rotary. To help manage these responsibilities, Phil is looking for Co-Chairs for each specific event.
Thank you to the following members who have already volunteered:
- Lenexa Art Fair: Tedd Maxfield - Great Lenexa BBQ Battle: Kevin Day
We still need a Co-Chair for the Lenexa Chili Challenge, which takes place every October. If you are able to help Co-Chair this event, please contact Phil Hammond directly.
The Lenexa Rotary Foundation has approved the use of reserve funding, supplemented by member donations, to add a tree in honor of Steve Nettles to the Lenexa Rotary Grove at Clear Creek Park at 8700 Clare Road.
In 2017, the Lenexa Rotary planted 50 trees at Clear Creek Park. Additional funds allowed us to plant trees recognizing the following former members and past presidents:
PDG Charlie Smith – Charter President 1967-68 PDG Gene Amos – President 1980–81 Tom Sherard – Charter Member Wes Fry – President 1983–84 Alan Uhl – President 1971–72 David Huff Dennis Moore
If you would like to contribute toward Steve Nettles' tree, please submit your donation to Phil Hammond. Checks should be made payable to Lenexa Rotary Foundation. Any funds raised beyond the required amount will be donated to the District 5710 Anti-Human Trafficking Committee.
