Our speaker this Friday will be Barb McEver, Co-Founder of Project 1020, a cold weather shelter in Lenexa.

Project 10❤️20 started out small, but with big hearts! Two concerned citizens, Barb McEver and Dean Askeland, were seeing that homelessness was growing in Johnson County – said to be one of the richest counties in Kansas – but learned there were no shelters here for adults unaccompanied by minor children.

They decided to see what they could do to help. In 2015, they bought 10 cots and other supplies and found space at Redemption Church in Olathe to operate a cold weather shelter. Whenever the temperature was forecast to be 20 degrees or colder, the shelter was open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. During the first winter in operation, Project 10❤️20 provided shelter to an average of six to seven people on those coldest of nights.

Project 10❤️20 grew in 2018 to hosting guests every night from December 1st through March 31st, removing the 20-degree temperature threshold.

Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church offered their space and support working with the City of Lenexa.

The shelter continues as a 100% volunteer-and donation-supported organization.

What is your occupation
Psychometrician - Educational Psychologist
I developed state and federal civil service, and licensing/certification examinations for 43 years.  Before developing any exams we are legally required to a job analysis to determine the most important knowledge and skill requirements.  My two most interesting exams were for prison guards and funeral directors.  I know just enough to be dangerous about many occupations - but too much about embalming!

What books have had a big impact on you?
Murder mysteries.  I like to see the bad guys get justice (not necessarily legally!)

What activities were you involved in high school and college?
High School - all sports, and music - played the cello.  College - I plead the fifth!

What is your favorite board game, and do you usually win?
Dominoes - sometimes

What is the worst movie you have ever seen and who did you see it with?
Worst and Best - Night of the Living Dead

What pets have you had and what were/are their names?
First dog when growing up was Skipper.  He passed when I was in college.  Our first dogs as a couple were a Lhasa Apso and a Shih Tzu.  They were 10 pounds and made it 20 and 18 years.  Then we had a German Shepherd/Chow mix named Yogi.  He was 60-70 pounds and built like a line backer.  He made it 12 years.  Our last dog was an Australian Shepherd/Beagle/Pit Bull/and others mix.  He was 40 pounds and made it 12 years also.  I currently have grand-dogs.  Toby is a 70 pound English Chocolate Lab and Layla is an 80 pound Boxer mix.  In case you can't tell, I am a dog lover

What is your most prized or sentimental possession?  Explain.
My vintage stereo equipment.  My favorites are from the 70/s when I was in college.  I still enjoy "meditating" while listening to them.  Although in the last 40 years I have designed and built approximately 15 pairs of bookshelf speakers and 7 subwoofers.  It combines woodworking and mathematical formulas to design them properly.  I enjoy all types of music except opera
