Our speaker this Friday will be Becky Parrot to give us an update from the Johnson County Commission on Aging. She is a valued member of the Commission and focuses on among many things - community outreach. It's certain to be a valuable and interesting presentation.

HopeBuilders Build - November 22nd
November 22 is the date for our annual wheelchair ramp build.  For those of you new to the club, every year we work with Hopebuilders to build a wheelchair ramp to enable a handicapped person to stay in their home.  This requires no special skills or tools on your part.  No experience needed.  We work from 8:30 until completion.  You are welcome to come if you can only work part of the day.  Your spouses, children and grandchildren are welcome to participate- no experience necessary!  They must be at least 16 years of age.  Our club foundation contributes $1000 towards the cost of materials for the project.

Newsletter Editor on Vacation

I will be on vacation from October 9-24.  Ben Harber has graciously agreed to do the newsletter for the next two weeks and Pat Thomas or Moe Cougher said they will fill in for me at the weekly meetings.

I will be taking a Viking Romantic Danube river cruise and then after the cruise will be going to Prague and Berlin.

If you need anything, I will still be checking my email.

See you on Halloween!

Rotarian Spotlight
  1. Name:  Moe Cougher
  2. What is/was your occupation?  Retired from International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) Sold/Marketed large computer systems to large customers.
  3. What is your favorite book(s)?   I am an avid reader and work as a volunteer in a public library used book store, so I read lots of books.  I don’t have a single favorite book or author.  Some authors that I have enjoyed lately have been Amor Towles and Fredrik Backman for fiction and Malcom Gladwell for non-fiction.
  1. What activities were you involved in high school and college?  In high school; the school newspaper and yearbook, football, debate, band.  In college; football, student newspaper and radio station, social fraternity, a couple of rock bands, lots of beer.
  2. What is your favorite board game, and do you usually win?  I don’t play any board games, per se.  I like word games (crosswords puzzles, Wordle, Connections, Strands).  I consider myself unbeatable, but then again there is no competition.
  3. What is the worst movie you have ever seen and who did you see it with?  In addition to reading, I also watch lots of movies on streaming TV, and am almost always alone.  If I’m not into them in the first 20 minutes, I switch to something else.  My least favorite movie genre is “Horror”.  Never have enjoyed being scared.  That goes for amusement park rides as well.
  4. What pets have you had and what are their names?  Only dogs.  Scamp (mutt terrier), Bosco (Boxer), Dudley (Old English Sheepdog) , Pete, Dave and Jake (all English Springer Spaniels).
  5. What is your most prized or sentimental possession?  Explain.  I’m not a sentimental or nostalgic person, and don’t hold onto keepsakes.  I prize my sense of humor.  I never take myself or the world too seriously.  Keeps me somewhat centered.
