Rotarian Spotlight

Sarah Donohoe
  1. What is/was your occupation?  Historic interpreter at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm
  2. What was your first job?  Other than babysitting, I worked at a Russell Stover store with the black and white checked floor, in the mall in Lincoln, Nebraska. I might have eaten more than I sold. It’s a good thing I ran track or I wouldn’t have fit into my white dress and black necktie uniform.
  3. What is your favorite hobby or pastime?  Um, eating chocolate?
  4. Where did you grow up and what was it like? Two places: My family of five kids and two parents lived in Wheaton, Illinois until I was 13. My dad took the train into the city to work. We moved to Lincoln, Nebraska then, into a brand new house. My parents lived in that house for 43 years. Like so many of us, I’ve gone through the heartbreaking experience of having to sell the childhood home when my parents could no longer live there on their own.
  5. What is a favorite movie you always recommend to people?  Why do you love it? “Local Hero.” (1983) A U.S. oil executive is sent to Scotland to buy the entire town and its surrounding areas to build an oil refinery. He falls in love with the land and its people instead. I’m passionate about the environment so the message really hits home. The movie has quirky characters, subtle humor, and the soundtrack is the music of Mark Knopfler. I don’t like the side story of Burt Lancaster’s outlandish behavior, but I tolerate it so I can bask in the rest of the heartwarming story.
  6. If you were coming out onto a stage, what would your entrance theme song be? “Sara Smile” by Hall & Oats (1975). “Oh won’t you smile along with me?”
  7. What is your favorite type of cuisine to cook or eat? Um, chocolate?  No, seriously, I have a dehydrator and make fruit rolls and beef jerky for Christmas every year for family members who swear I could sell the stuff and make millions. I like to make my crusts from scratch when I bake pies and also enjoy making cinnamon rolls. You better take me seriously when I have a rolling pin in my hands.
