Our speaker will be Kurt Austin, the Communications Director with Sporting KC.
Sporting Kansas City's 2023 season will mark the club's 28th year in Major League Soccer. Kansas City was introduced as one of the 10 charter members of MLS on June 6, 1995. Four months later, the league unveiled the nicknames, logos and uniform designs for the franchises, including the Kansas City Wiz. In November of 1996 the team name was changed to Kansas City Wizards and in November of 2010 the name Sporting KC was unveiled as the club's new identity. Lenexa Rotary will once again be helping sell concessions at the Lenexa Spinach Festival along with the Lenexa Historical Society. We will be grilling burgers and serving spinach salad along with other tasty treats. Below is the sign-up sheet. If you want to help, please contact Phil Hammond
Lenexa Rotary over the years has donated to many of the projects of the Lenexa Historical Society. Since 2019 Lenexa Rotary has helped LHS raise over $13,892 by providing labor at the BBQ Parking and Spinach Festival. Thank you Lenexa Rotary!
Have you turned in your beer can full of money to Fred Spears?
Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears, has started passing out beer cans to all members. We have done this the past several years to raise money for a certain cause -- this year's cause to be determined. In the past we have used the money toward a meal packing project "Rise Against Hunger" and also for Anti Human Trafficking.
Fill your beer can with change, bills or a check and return it to Fred Spears.
Tell us about your family: My wife, Jill and I have two grown daughters, one 11 year old dog named Jordy (after former K-State football great, Jordy Nelson), and a delightful 3 year-old granddaughter
When did you join Rotary:I first joined in 1996 in Nevada, Missouri. I had a 4 year hiatus when I lived in Arkansas, then rejoined in 2012 when I lived in Minnesota
Why did you join Rotary: Both of my parents were Rotarians, and I knew they enjoyed the camaraderie and the service projects. Once I was involved and saw all the opportunities to serve and build relationships, Rotary became an important aspect of my life!
What Rotary offices have you held: I have serves as Secretary, President, YEO (in two clubs, now!) and as a member of the Lenexa Rotary Foundation board
What is your favorite Rotary memory or project? I really like working with the Youth Exchange. We have the chance to learn (and for our local kids to learn) so much about the world when these students live in our community. The program has broadened my limited international knowledge
When you are not working, how do you spend your time? I spend a fair amount of time walking our dog. I play racquetball and pickleball, and of course, hot air ballooning!
