This Friday our our speaker will be Elisa Zöhrer. Elisa is our exchange student this year and is from Bad Ischl, Austria, near Salzburg. She is attending Shawnee Mission West and is currently participating in gymnastics. Her host parents are Dean and Linda Porter. We look forward to hearing about Elisa's home and her experiences so far in the United States.
KMBZ Coats for Kids-Nov. 2 - Dec. 4
Entering its 13th year, KMBZ's Coats for Kids is a community outreach campaign to collect new and used coats for Kansas City area children in need. Community partners include Pride Cleaners, Arrow Fabricare and Excel Lenin Supply, sho clean every used coat. Two Men and a Truck provides trucks and drivers, delivering coats to kids at the Johnson County Christmas Bureau, and school districts on both sides of the state line. A significant cash donation from Honeywell of Kansas City is matched by KMBZ listeners during the final two weeks of the program to purchase newe coats.
Lenexa Rotary along with other Johnson County Rotary clubs will help at pick-up sites and help sort coats. The Lenexa Rotary Foundation has agreed to let the cash donations run through its account as a 501(c)3 organization. More information will be coming regarding times to sign-up to help.
Shawnee Mission College Clinic
Once again this year, Lenexa Rotarians will be helping at the Shawnee Mission Clinic. Jim Blaufuss is coordinating this project. We usually distribute water to booths and also help with crowd control before the doors open. Additionally, Lenexa Rotary will have a booth to promote our Wes Fry 4 Way Test Speech Contest. Read to Students at Horizon Academy
In July Caitlin McGrath from Horizon Academy spoke to our club. Horizon Academy is a private school in Roeland Park for grades 1-12 which teacjes students with learning disabilities. Lenexa Rotary recently donated books to their school library. We have been presented with the opportunity to come to their school and read to the students. Last Friday, Jerry Harper, announced to see him if any Lenexa Rotarian would like to volunteer to read to the students at Horizon Academy.
Lenexa Fire Safety Trailer
Fire safety training begins next week, October 1st. The dates are: October 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 21. There are two shifts: 9:00-11:30 am & 11:30-2:00 p.m. A list of schools and dates are on the Lenexa Rotary website. Contact Ashley Sherard for more information.
Stop Hunger Now - Beer Can Collection
A few beer cans have been returned. Drink up and bring your cans in to give to Fred. Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears has beer cans available for members who need one. Please fill them up with coins and/or a check and return them to Fred Spears. Fred says that a 12 oz. can will hold approximately: $70 in quarters, $81 in dimes, or $21 in nickels -- or you can just write a check! Money will be collected until December 4th. We plan on again packaging meals with the SMNW Interact sometime this winter.
Dictionary Project
Craig Denny is organizing the Dictionary Project. The dictionaries have arrived and members met this week to put stickers in the front of 888 dictionaries. The dictionaries will be delivered to 3rd grade students in 13 local elementary schools.More information to come.
Notes from the "YPad"
Last week on the YPad: Topic idea: How to get the most out of the Rotary website including "Friends of the Club."
There is a part of the Rotary Clubrunner website that allows us to have "Friends of the Club." Friends would then get Lenexa Rotary emails and newsletters. It is a great way to get our information out to the community and to recruit prospective members. We have been adding more "Friends" this year, but no one can have too many Friends. :) If you have someone to add to the Friends of the Club, email President Amy with their email address. More to come on this topic.
During the meeting if you think of some thing that you want to share, feel free to jot it down on the YPad -- a random thought, a suggestion, a compliment, an idea for a speaker, a joke, etc. Each week President Amy will pick up the YPads and report any messages in the newsletter and at the following meeting.

Mark Naster from Habitat for Humanity was our speaker last week and updated us on Habitat for Humanity in the Kansas City area. He also told us about two of their thrift stores on the Kansas side called Habitat for Humanity ReStore. ReStore is a public retail outlet that sells quality new and used surplus building materials and appliances that are priced at 20%to 80% off retail. All items in the store are donated, including fixtures, furniture, appliances and construction materials.The net income received helps fund the construction of additional Heartland Habitat homes and communities.Heartland Habitat ReStore helps keep the community green by re-channeling and re-using good, functional materials instead of adding them to landfills – to the tune of more than 2,000 tons annually!
