Africa Peace Concert

Christopher Coleman mentioned this at Friday's meeting, and then was contacted by several members whose banks don't like making payments to Uganda. Details and instructions are below.

Commemorating 100 years of Rotary International in Africa, the first of its kind virtual Rotary Africa Peace Concert is on Friday, April 23, 2021, from 10:00 - 1:00 CDT.

The participation fee is a minimum of US$50. Three hours of African beat, colour & rhythm by Africa’s best-performing arts Proceeds from the concert go to the Africa Peace Centre Makerere University Rotary Peace Center

This contribution of $50 or more will be credited to your TRF giving and indeed will add up to the overall giving of your Club and District

For the Rotarians whose banks aren't prepared to make a payment to Uganda, follow these instructions:
  1. Make a payment of at least $50 straight to The Rotary Foundation, designating the Rotary Peace Centers under endowments
  2. Email the confirmation of payment to Espen Malmberg, Foundation Services Manager, Rotary International Europe Africa Office:
     espen.malmberg@rotary.org
  3. Espen will then designate it to the African Peace Fund and share your email address with the organizers so that you get the concert link.
There's an African proverb which says: "Even without drumbeats banana leaves dance." If this seems like a lot of jumping around, I trust the concert will make you shake your banana leaf, even as you support a great cause.

WE NEED YOU!
We are still in need of a Club Secretary for the 2021-2022 Rotary year beginning in July.  Please contact Christopher Coleman if you are interested.

Senator Roger Marshall-April 30th

As you know, Senator Roger Marshall will be the presenter at our April 30 meeting. However to accommodate his plane connections to KC, we will need to start the meeting at 12:30. This will give him time to deplane (his plane is scheduled to arrive at 12:25)  and get settled before he joins our meeting. Also, to help target his presentation, please send any questions you may have for him to Fred Spears (fspears@everestkc.net) by April 26 so he can forward them to the Senator. In case you need some background material about the Senator, I am attaching a link to an article from Sunday's KC Star in case you don't have access the newspaper. It provides information about his political career and his first few months as the new KS Senator.

Thanks for your cooperation.
Collecting Egg Cartons
We are collect egg cartons to be given to a local food pantry.  They only need the 12 egg cartons, not 18.
If you have some to donate, please contact Steve NettlesYou can drop them off at his house or you can drop them of at Rimann Liquors at 87th & Lackman.

Streamway Clean-Up

As you know, our club has adopted the stretch of greenway between Lackman and Pflumm along 83rd Street. Thanks to the volunteers who helped out this past Saturday morning (17 April) for the Mill Creek Streamway Cleanup project - Becca Coleman, Moe Cougher, Mike Dix, Tedd Maxfield, Steve Nettles, Ron Tennison, Pat Thomas, Erik Troy, Wayne Zetzman. The group spent about an hour and had an enjoyable time working together. A special thanks to Erik Troy for organizing this project.

RYLA
RYLA will happen this summer over the course of three different weeks. Two camps will be day camps where parents (or students) will need to drive to and from daily. One camp will be virtual.

Both day camps can accept 30 students and will cost $250 while the virtual camp can accept 36 students and will cost $50.

The deadlines for the camps all vary due to the dates of the camps. That's why there are three different applications!

There will be three camp options. Deadline is two weeks prior to the date of each camp:

May 31 deadline for 6/21-6/25-face to face, day camp Lawrence, KS
June 7 deadline for 6/28-7/2-VIRTUAL camp
June 16 deadline for 7/12-7/16-face to face, day camp, Overland Park, KS (KU Edwards campus)

If you have any students who are good candidates, please contact Lenexa Rotarian Sarah Donohoe

Please visit the RYLA page of the website for applications and brochure!

Rotary Youth Exchange

On Friday March 19th the RI Board of Directors met and voted to continue the postponement of all Youth Exchange activities until June of 2022.   This will make the second year in a row that the Covid Pandemic has put a halt to all inbound and outbound activities.   Unfortunately many of our students will be ineligible to participate the next year due to age restrictions.  The youth exchange program will begin interviewing this December for the potential of a program in the fall of 2022.  We will keep our fingers crossed that the pandemic will be under control by then.

Rotary and County Square

To date, we know the majority of Clubs in District 5710 have indicated they will work to meet their goal of $50 per member: As a Bonus, District 5710 has committed $4,000 to help fund this effort.

Rotary is working with the County to develop a permanent signage/recognition element for the Tree Grove to memorialize this Rotary gift to the people of Johnson county - hopefully listing the participating clubs.

The current February membership count of the Johnson County Clubs is 587 Rotarians. At $50 per member, the District could easily reach  a total of $29,350.   There will be a prize for the club with the most significant percentage over their goal. The Lenexa Rotary Foundation has pledged $1000 but is requesting a $50 donations from all members.  All contributions from club members are voluntary. It is our hope that we will reach the $50 goal.

Please make your check out to "The Lenexa Rotary Foundation" and send your check to:
