Our speaker will be Rick Walker, the Mayor of DeSoto. Rick is a lifelong area resident and has lived in the City of De Soto for the past 30 years. He is a graduate of De Soto High School and the University of Kansas. He works as a senior project manager and division manager for transportation projects at Cook, Flatt & Strobel Engineers in the Kansas City, Missouri office. He is married to his wife Monica and has two grown sons, Luke and Kyle.
We are a group of diverse people passionate about service. Service is what we do. It brings a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that is priceless; and it comes in many forms. During the 2022-23 Rotary year, I want everyone to discover (or re-discover) their own Rotary passion and avenue of service. I hope to see you raise your hands when asked to serve. I will be contacting each of you to find out what I can do to make your Rotary Experience more rewarding. I want to incorporate a Rotary Minute at every meeting. Consider this one: The original members of the first Rotary Club felt that fellowship and goodwill was so important that they informally resolved to take steps to avoid any risks to their friendships, banning the discussion of topics that might have created controversy and hurt feelings. Paul Harris wrote: “Go about your common tasks together; avoid discussions of dissentious subjects, and your reward will be friendship.”
The establishment of a standing Fellowship Committee will ensure that all those who joined for fellowship will have plenty of avenues to get to know and appreciate each other. Let me talk a little more about this Rotary year. The theme for this year is “Imagine Rotary.” Albert Einstein said that “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” Jennifer Jones, our first female President of Rotary International, has asked us to take a step back and to IMAGINE what else we could be doing, or what we could be doing better. Can we set higher goals, recruit more members, create new collaborations, make a bigger impact, tackle problems we never considered, or change the world around us for the better?
During this coming year as your Club President, let’s take up Jennifer’s challenge and imagine what more this Club can be. Come with me on this journey and let our imaginations soar. Remember that scene in Field of Dreams when Kevin Costner sees a message on the scoreboard: “Build it and they will come.” Well, let’s put our own spin on that message: “Imagine it and we will make it happen – together!” I am so inspired for the coming year – and I imagine you all are too!
THIS SATURDAY Lenexa Rotary will be helping the Lenexa Fire Department by serving hot dogs, chips and water to the attendees of the Open House. We are still in need of volunteers for the afternoon shift. Please contact Ashley Sherard if you can help. Here is a list of the people already signed-up:

One of the highlights of the Rotary year is the annual District Conference; an opportunity to join fellow Rotarians from across northeast Kansas for a few days of information, inspiration, and fun! The committee has put together a great schedule of events, and we’d love to see you there. Our theme, “Building Champions, Changing the World”, will play upon Kansas City’s recent sports reputation as a budding “Title Town”, while focusing the work of our clubs and members to improve our communities – both locally and abroad.
Held on September 22-24, 2022, at the Hyatt Place at Lenexa City Center, the conference will feature nationally known keynote speakers, phenomenal breakout sessions on a variety of service and organizational topics (including several roundtable sessions that will allow you to brainstorm and compare notes with members from other clubs on a variety of relevant topics), hands-on service projects, and plenty of fellowship!

As Ben mentioned, going to Hawaii marks my 50th state! We spent a week on Oahu and a week on the big island of Hawaii. Last week Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears, passed out beer cans to members in attendance. This year the proceeds from this collection will go to the Stop Human Trafficking campaign. Here is what to do:

Get your can from Fred
Drink it, or cook / grill with it
Clean the can and DRY the can
Fill the can with money – dimes & quarters usually add up to ~$75; cash and checks are fine too
Return to Fred through the end of September
Fred will give you another can and you can fill it up again or just drink it!
The Shawnee Mission College Clinic is BACK! We have helped on this project for many years. Lenexa Rotary has given money and will help with manpower at the Shawnee Mission College Clinic.
