Rotary Matters
"Throw In The Towel" Campaign

A few weeks ago, Tam Singer from Great Plains SPCA spoke to our club and mentioned that they are always in need of donated towels.  This gave our Sergeant-At-Arms Fred Spears an idea!

At last week's meeting, Fred proposed a "Throw in the Towel" campaign to have our members and friends bring in their used towels for the month of April.  Fred will then contact Tam Singer at Great Plains SPCA and hopefully be able to give her a huge amount of towels.

So . . . bring in your towels!  If you can't bring them to the meeting, please contact Fred Spears

PolioPlus Society

Last year, District 5710 established a PolioPlus Society.  This is where Rotarians pledge to give at least $100 per year to Rotary International PolioPlus.  To become a member all you need to do is complete the PoioPlus Society pledge form.  As a member of the Society you pledge to donate a minimum of $100 each year until the world is certified polio free by the World Health Organization.

To become a member of the PolioPlus Society, polease contact Matt Janes, the Lenexa Rotary PolioPlus Chair, to get a pledge form.

Travis Vaughn

What is your occupation?

Fire Chief - City of Lenexa Fire Department

What was your first job?

My first job at the age of 15 was at the Windbrook Golf Course (currently The National Golf Club) where I worked at the “19th Hole” restaurant and event space. Primary responsibilities included washing dishes and assisting with large event set up and service.

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

My favorite hobby was undoubtedly playing golf during days off from working 24-hour shifts.  Now that I work normal business hours and have children, I enjoy being a supportive spectator at their sporting and music events.

Where did you grow up and what was it like?

I grew up in an unincorporated area of Platte County, Missouri, later annexed by Parkville. I was fortunate to have a wonderful childhood. Just before my teenage years we moved a very short distance to a larger home with a pool, which made for fun memories with family and friends. I was blessed with parents who raised us in church and were heavily involved in my sports and activities. My father and mother worked for Trans World Airlines (TWA) for many years (mom
for 35 and dad for 47), which provided many travel benefits.

What is a favorite movie you always recommend to people?  Why do you love it?

I’m not much of a movie buff. I do tend to appreciate movies where the underdogs accomplish something that seems insurmountable. "Facing the Giants" comes to mind, especially the “death crawl” scene:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m8pz4xddWA

If you were coming out onto a stage, what would your entrance theme song be?

Wow, this is a tough question. It would have to be something upbeat. Maybe “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor written for the movie "Rocky III"

What is your favorite type of cuisine to cook or eat?

The preferred cuisine in our household is Mexican, where the variety of quality tasting fare is plentiful, and the margaritas aren’t too shabby either!

Peace Poles

2024 Peace Poles Project
Important Dates for Volunteer Opportunities

The jury approved 40 Peace Pole submissions.  The renderings were spectacular with a lot of diversity of where artists took the concept.  It’s really going to be something to see.  The topography of Black Hoof will add a lot to the display and arrangement.

The recipient charity will be Project 1020 and we will be using the auction platform of 32auctions.  Susanne Neely has been awesome in every way across the board.  I can’t say enough good things about her support of Lenexa and Rotary.
