This Friday . . .

Lenexa Rotarian Phil Hammond will be speaking about the history of Old Town Lenexa.  Old Town is the original town site of Lenexa and was founded in 1869 by Octave Chanute, a civil engineer who purchased 41.5 acres near the railroad from Charles A. Bradshaw. This area features traditional mixed-use development and includes businesses, homes and churches. The historic business district still stands at Pflumm Road and Santa Fe Trail Drive. A rail line owned by BNSF Railway runs through Old Town. It played a part in the growth of Lenexa and continues to influence land use in the area.

Rotary Matters
Annual Beer Can Collection
Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears, started passing out beer cans to all members last Friday.  We have done this the past several years to raise money for a certain cause -- this year's cause to be determined.  In the past we have used the money toward a meal packing project "Rise Against Hunger" and also for Anti Human Trafficking.

What to do:
Drink the beer (or have a friend or relative drink it for you or use it to cook Beer Can Chicken)

Wash the can out (and let it dry)

Stuff it full of change - dimes or quarters usually amount to about $75

If you are coinless, we take cash.  If you are cashless, we take checks

If you have neither coins or cash, get a job.

Return the can to Fred with your name either in or on it.

Fred will give you another can when you return the first either as a thank you or as a plea for more money.

We will conclude this event on September 29, 2023

Typically about 20 in the club participate.

Lenexa Rotary Foundation Meeting 8/16
Fellow Rotarians,

I’m excited to serve as our 2023-24 Chair of the Lenexa Rotary Foundation.  I wanted to provide you an update on our status and planning.  We will be having live lunch meetings quarterly at Zarda BBQ.  Our first meeting will be August 16th from 11:30am to 12:30pm.  All Rotarians are welcome.  For non-Board Members, please send me a note ahead of time if you plan to attend so I can have enough seats set aside.    All Rotarians are able to submit a grant request for review.  If you have a project or cause in mind, please consider submitting a grant request.  For consideration at the August 16th Board meeting, make sure to email me your grant request by August 5th.

Tell us about your family:
Betty and I have shared our journeys for 52 years. We are blessed that our daughters Brooke and Laura and their families live in our local area; Brooke and family in Overland Park, and Laura and family in Shawnee. We have four grandchildren; Jack (21 - a senior at UNL), Luke (19 - student at JCCC, attended an academy in Spain and dreams of playing professional soccer), Will (14 - entering his freshman year at Mill Creek High School and envisions playing
for another State Football Championship), and Anna (12 - entering her 7th grade year at Monticello Trail Middle School and playing Middle School and Club-level volleyball.)

When did you join Rotary:  I initially joined Leawood Rotary in 2001, and Lenexa Rotary in 2017

Why did you join Rotary:  The simple answer is that I was invited by a friend. The more happenings of our city and greater community, one that makes a difference, and one that provides opportunities to serve in multiple capacities.

What Rotary offices have you held: Secretary, Vice President, President Elect

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project?
While in Leawood Rotary, my favorite memory was helping to build a three-hole outhouse for Leawood’s replica town (Ironwoods Park) in Stu Sharp’s vintage barn on his Leawood farm on Mission Road.
Lenexa Rotary has provided several from which to choose, but my favorite memories and projects are those which allow interaction with members of our Lenexa community.

When you are not working, how do you spend your time?
Our nomadic career in the Army shaped this response, but we now enjoy the stability provided by our Church, of living in Lenexa and the greater KC community, and of living close to our family allowing us to be a major part of their lives and attend our grandchildren’s multiple activities. We also enjoy spending time as sports fans within our greater Kansas City area. And what a joy they have been, including two Super Bowls Championships, a World Series Championship, an MLS championship, two NCAA Basketball National Championships, and multiple local games and activities. Academically, I enjoy teaching a couple of leadership and communications courses each year for KSU’s College of Education Adult Graduate programs (and yes, I have sufficient loyalty to support Kansas’s two major universities!) And finally, I also enjoy the mind-clearing activities of writing and music – not good mind you, but at least mind-clearing.
