This Friday our speaker will be Trent Thompson with Johnson County Household Hazardous Waste.
Thompson oversees Johnson County’s new $3.6 million household hazardous waste and reuse facility that opened earlier this summer at 11231 Mastin St. in Overland Park. Thompson said the facility is one of largest in the region. When combined with the city of Olathe’s program, it receives the most waste in Kansas.
Since its inception, the Johnson County program has collected more than 12 million pounds of waste. For 30 years, the county’s household hazardous waste was taken to a 2,450-square-foot facility in Mission. More than 1.1 million pounds of waste was managed by that facility from July 2021 through June 2022. The new 9,800-square-foot building in Overland Park, which is on a half-acre of open space, was built on a former car wash that was redeveloped to meet regulations and requirements.
“We are able to store and process more,” Thompson said of the new facility. “Our best estimate is 20 to 30%.” Thompson said many aspects of the operation surprise people. Few realize the volume of materials that come through the facility, how much is recycled and how the process works, he said. “Over 80% of all materials received are recycled in one way or the other.”
Some of the waste includes paint; lawn and garden chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides and insecticides; pool chemicals; solvents such as paint thinners, acetone and kerosene; and wood preservatives. The facility also accepts mercury and banned pesticides such as DDT, chlordane, toxaphene and PCBs.
The jury met yesterday and approved 40 Peace Pole submissions. The renderings were spectacular with a lot of diversity of where artists took the concept. It’s really going to be something to see. The topography of Black Hoof will add a lot to the display and arrangement. I’ve included the timeline below and highlighted where volunteer opportunities. We have the Community Forum set for the live auction for the evening of Friday, 11/15 - similar to the first time we had it. Again, the recipient charity will be Project 1020 and we will be using the same auction platform of 32auctions. Susanne Neely has been awesome in every way across the board. I can’t say enough good things about her support of Lenexa and Rotary.

March 6 (4-5:30pm) – Artists pick up their poles from the Lenexa Parks Service Center, 13321 Walnut Street in Old Town. Potential for volunteers.
April 17 (4-5:30pm) – Artists drop off decorated poles to the Lenexa Parks Service Center, 13321 Walnut Street in Old Town. Potential for volunteers.
May 1 – Exhibit official opening date at Black Hoof Park (exhibit runs through September 30). Visit and enjoy!
May 23 – Artist Celebration/Awards Ceremony at the park. Potential for volunteers and participants.
September 17 (7pm Lenexa City Hall, 17101 W. 87th St. Pkwy.) – International Day of Peace Proclamation presented at City Council meeting.
October 7 (4-5:30pm at Parks Service Center) – Artists pick up poles to do repairs/touch-ups prior to auction.
November 4 (4-5:30pm at Parks Service Center) – Artists return touched-up poles.
November 15 (evening event) – Live auction event at Lenexa City Hall Art Gallery. Online auction will take place prior to live event. Details to come. Potential for volunteers.

We need all hands on deck for this event. This event is important for our club to raise the money we use to support all of our good works. It is a major way we put service above self.
The Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club is having a Snack Drive to benefit and donate to Rose Brooks Domestic Violence Center in Kansas City. The snacks are provided to survivors and their children throughout the day and at intake when the cafeteria isn’t open.
The Snack Drive will run until Friday, March 1st.
They are requesting individually packaged snackswithout nuts.

I have 4 adult children, Katherine, Kristie-Lynn, Jordan, and Timothy. We also have 4 grandchildren, Anthony, Alton, Dax and Penelope. We were a military family and have been through deployments and several duty stations. Bruce is from New Jersey, and I am from California. We were stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri when Bruce returned from Iraq and after he was medically retired, we chose to stabilize our family and as they graduated High School, they chose colleges in the KC area which is why decided to move to Lenexa.

Why did you join Rotary:
I have a passion for volunteering and doing acts of kindness in my community. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than just myself volunteering. I believe in what Rotary stands for and after researching several organizations, my best friend invited me to her Rotary meeting, and I immediately knew I wanted to be a Rotarian.

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project? My favorite is the Shrimp Fest and the work we did with the Veterans Community Project
When you are not working, how do you spend your time? I am enjoying time with my family whenever I can. I love to walk at the Kansas City Zoo, and you can find me there at least 2 times a month if not more
