This Friday . . .

Our speaker will be Harold Frye.  Harold serves as District 5710 Youth Protection Officer. In that role, he follows Rotary's Youth Protection policies, assuring that all members are aware of Rotary's commitment to protect our youth, whether in Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Interact, or any of the many club activities involving youth. Rotary leaders and all club members have a duty to be informed and ready to prevent any situation that jeopardizes the safety of our youth. Harold's professional background includes serving as chief investigating officer for inappropriate behavior complaints in a school district. He currently also serves on the Safe Boundaries committee for Heartland Presbytery. Harold has been a member of Overland Park South Rotary Club for 12 years.

Lenexa FD Fire Safety Trailer

A few reminders based on our shared past experience:
  • Double-check you’ve got your shift(s) on your calendar and the dates/times are correct – No reminders will be sent.
  • Plan to arrive 15 min before your shift so you can review what the firefighters would like you to do. Remember, 3rd graders receive fire safety instruction (generally you’ll re-set the fire hazards the kids have corrected in each room, answer a mock 911 call (script provided), and maybe run the smoke system), while 5th graders receive storm safety instruction (generally you’ll help simulate a tornado experience, flipping switches to turn out the lights, turn on “lightning” and get the shades moving, and helping gently rock the trailer.) For those who have previously volunteered, there is a new storm safety video featuring Kevin Hart and Jimmy Fallon (no more Regis Philbin and Who Wants to Be A Millionaire), so we’ll all have new switch-flipping cues to learn! 😊

Rotary Youth Exchange

Piper Borgman is our outbound Youth Exchange student who is in Chile this year.  Here are some pictures that she shared.

This was taken on September 18th, also commonly referred to as Chile's equivalent of the US Independence Day.  I celebrated the holiday with another exchange student and her host family in a nearby city on the beach and honoring the rich Chilean history

This was taken during an inbound orientation with the other exchange students in my district.  We have students from USA, Canada, Denmark, France, Belgium, Finland and the Netherlands.  In my city, there are 12 exchange students, all of whom I have grown very close to in the past two months.
World Polio Day-October 24th

World Polio Day is observed on October 24 every year to raise awareness for polio vaccination and eradication of polio. The World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

Through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), CDC works with partners to eradicate polio and end the suffering from this devastating disease. Stopping polio in all forms will require us to be resilient, adapt, and innovate to deliver a polio-free world. Through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), CDC works with partners  Rotary and the Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation  to eradicate polio and end the suffering from this devastating disease.

The last stronghold of poliovirus is in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Several critical challenges stand in the way of achieving eradication, including the global pandemic.

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. The Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is, therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops, and the world is polio-free.

There is great news as to how clubs around Rotary District 5710 are preparing to celebrate World Polio Day with a variety of Polio Plus Fundraising events and by recognizing the day in their cities by following the example set by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly who has signed a proclamation declaring "October 24, 2022 as World Polio Day in Kansas".
