Our speaker will be Dennis Patton, Horticulture Agent, with the K-State Extension in Olathe.
His areas of expertise are Extension Master Gardener volunteer management, Flowers, annuals and perennials, Horticultural environmental issues, and Ornamentals, trees and shrubs.
Dennis hails from south central Kansas growing up on a wheat farm near Caldwell, Kansas. He developed a love of nature and plants from his grandmother who was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing plants with friends and neighbors. After attending college at Kansas State University, Dennis worked briefly on a commercial vegetable farm in central Kansas before working with the K-State Research and Extension. His Extension career started in McPherson County before joining the Johnson County staff.
Our meeting on the 5th Friday of September will be at Park University at Lenexa City Center. Order your food ahead of time, pick it up and come to the 2nd Floor. We will meet in the large classroom. Our speaker will be Joe Folsom with Johnson County Med-Act.
Last week, 912 dictionaries were delivered to Craig Denny's garage. Please join Craig on Thursday evening, September 21 at 7 :00 pm when we will attached our Rotary label inside the cover of each book and then divide them for delivery to the 18 local elementary schools we support.

We are partnering with the Shawnee Rotary Club for a ramp building event. If you are interested in volunteering for this project please contact Greg Peterson. This is a very rewarding experience that enables older adults and people with disabilities in the Kansas City Metro area live in safe, accessible and healthy homes. You don't need to be a master craftsman to volunteer, you just need to be able to work. A ramp gives hope to those who didn't have hope before receiving a ramp.

In addition to Fire Captain Butch Diekemper’s note to Fire Department staff and event volunteers – including us – I wanted to personally and sincerely thank you for volunteering your time last Saturday to supporting the Fire Department’s 100th Anniversary Open House.
We grilled, bunned, rolled, and served 1,200 hot dogs and chips to a very appreciative crowd, a new record – based on my calculation, that was an average of one hot dog every eight seconds, from the first dogs going on the grill until we ran out. That simply would not be possible without our large number of volunteers and your hard work and positive attitude.
I especially want to shout out our Interactors – Ellie, Sam, Sand, Mia, Elise, and Gentry – and spouses Betty (Bill) and Peyton (River) who non-stop manned their stations like absolute pros.

I have adult 3 children - 2 girls and a boy of which the youngest is my favorite. I have 8 grand kids and 2 great grands
When did you join Rotary:I joined Rotary through Marshall Rimann's sponsorship in 2003
Why did you join Rotary: I thought it was a unique way to serve my community and get involved with like minded individuals
What Rotary offices have you held: In 2011-2012 I held office as President. I have also held office as Board of Director and Foundation Board
What is your favorite Rotary memory or project? My favorite memories involve cooking for worthy causes such as cooking for Shawnee Mission Hospital sponsoring baby seats; cooking for Gene Amos and Family during the sponsoring of maternity rooms for mothers and newborns; as well as cooking for yearly Christmas gatherings
When you are not working, how do you spend your time? I love volunteering for service projects, being an active board member of the Lenexa Police Department Advisory Board and Hillcrest Transitional Housing Board. I very much enjoy time with my grandchildren and my club members
