This Friday . . .

Our speaker will be Chuck Stevens with the Kansas City Chapter of the Navy League of the United States.  The Navy League of the United States, founded in 1902 with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, is a nonprofit civilian, educational and advocacy organization that supports America’s sea services: the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.

As part of its mission focus, the Navy League of the United States: Enhances the morale of sea service personnel and their families through national and council level programs; is a powerful voice to educate the public and Congress of importance to our nation's defense, well-being and economic prosperity; and supports youth through programs, that expose young people to the values of our sea services.

Lenexa Chili Challenge-Volunteers Needed!

Lenexa FD Fire Safety Trailer-VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We’ll be back this year providing behind-the-scenes assistance to the Lenexa Fire Department during their fire safety education trailer visits to Lenexa-area elementary schools! Only 3rd and 5th graders visit the trailer (all other grade-levels receive classroom instruction). Each classroom visits the trailer for 30 minutes, split into two 15-min groups. The firefighters make the presentations and wrangle the kids; we generally don’t have much interaction with students outside of answering a mock 911 call – instead, we act as The Great and Powerful Oz, resetting fire hazards in rooms, flipping switches, running the smoke machine, etc.

We need one (1) Rotarian per morning and afternoon shift, and Rotarians should plan to arrive 15 min before your shift. Our default volunteer timeslots are 9-11:30am and 11:30am-2pm – but I have the actual classroom schedules and was able to adjust volunteer timeslots for each individual school. You are of course more than welcome to work more than one shift (please do, in fact!), whether back-to-back or on different days!

Unfortunately we’ve lost a lot of former volunteers to retirement/resignation, and we are looking to add new recruits to our trailer volunteer roster! No prior experience is necessary. You can either drop by another shift for a bit and have that Rotarian show you the ropes, or the LFD is willing to set up training times for any new volunteers, or in a pinch the LFD can show you onsite how to help. So don’t be shy! Just reply to Ashley Sherard at asherard@lenexa.org with the slot(s) you want on the schedule below (you’ll note some shifts are already filled), and I’ll keep the master list.
