This Friday our speaker will be Lenet Compton.  She will be speaking to us about the Colombia Water Project - Global Grant.

Rotary, especially Lenexa Rotary club, has been involved in water projects for a long time. Lenet will explain what made this water project in Columbia South America different from water projects you may be familiar with.  Rotary projects always create a lot of fun, formulate new relationship bonds and share new learning. Hear about these project aspects along with seeing how the financial power of Rotary blew this project off the chart.

"Throw In The Towel" Campaign

Bring in your towels!

Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears has started a "Throw in the Towel" campaign to have our members and friends bring in their used towels for the month of April to be donated to Great Plains SPCA.  Hopefully we will be able to donate a HUGE amount of towels.

So . . . bring in your towels!  If you can't bring them to the meeting, please contact Fred Spears
Peace Poles

2024 Peace Poles Project
Important Dates for Volunteer Opportunities

The jury approved 40 Peace Pole submissions.  The renderings were spectacular with a lot of diversity of where artists took the concept.  It’s really going to be something to see.  The topography of Black Hoof will add a lot to the display and arrangement.

The recipient charity will be Project 1020 and we will be using the auction platform of 32auctions.  Susanne Neely has been awesome in every way across the board.  I can’t say enough good things about her support of Lenexa and Rotary.

Pat Thomas

What is your occupation?

Retired Banking Executive.  Banking was fun in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.  I enjoyed helping people reach their business financial goals. The last 10-15 years wasn’t really that enjoyable. Glad to be a retired banker!

What was your first job?

Credit Analyst for a commercial finance company in Kansas City, Missouri

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

Enjoy shooting skeet, trap and sporting clays (especially with my buddy Moe Cougher)  I enjoy fussing over my newer dog (a Sheltie named Gracie).  She gets brushed every day, teeth included, and sports a perfume that smells like baby powder. Very spoiled…….

Where did you grow up and what was it like?

Grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.  I was the oldest of 4 boys and my Mom’s hair was prematurely gray.  I believe I was the most responsible of my siblings although that is up for debate.   My Mom didn’t drive and didn’t work till we were in high school.   To make money I assisted our school janitor after school each day and had W-2 income when I was 12 years old.  I was/am devoutly Catholic and began going to morning Mass when I was 17 (50 years ago).  When I travel domestically or internationally, the first thing I do is find the nearest Catholic church.  I still attend daily Mass and am very involved in ministries at Holy Trinity Parish in Lenexa including training young altar boys/girls.  I had 4 Italian-American aunts and my Mom learned to cook excellent Italian.  Actually, I thought my family was Italian till I was probably 9 years old.

What is a favorite movie you always recommend to people?  Why do you love it?

I always loved James Bond movies!  The special effects on early Bond movies was poor, but the intrigue, exciting plots in far-away places, and of course the sexual innuendo, was great for a sheltered Catholic kid.

If you were coming out onto a stage, what would your entrance theme song be?

Takin’ Care of Business, by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.  I played the electric guitar and sang in my own rock band in high school. We called ourselves THIS SIDE UP and sported powder blue leisure suits at dances and small coffee shop gigs.  Because our vocals and instrumental abilities were marginal, we decided amplification might be the answer. Played a lot of Chicago (I thought I was the next Peter Cetera), Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Styx.  I still have guitars, still not accomplished.  On my to-do list for 2024/25 is to take guitar lessons and learn to read music.  We’ll see……

What is your favorite type of cuisine to cook or eat?

I only cook simple meals at home and frankly eat-out a lot.  My favorite cuisine is Italian followed closely by Mexican.
