Rotary Matters
In Memory of Charles Smith, Charter President

Charles Robert Smith, 89, Mission, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Charles was born February 28, 1931, to the late Charles and Margaret Smith in Kansas City, Kansas.  Charles graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1948.  He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Washburn University and a master’s degree in Guidance Counseling from the University of Kansas. Charles started his career in education in 1959 with the Shawnee Mission School District.  He went on to teach at Old Mission Junior High, Shawnee Mission West and served as the Vice Principal.  He was inaugural principal for Trailridge Middle School when it opened in 1967.  In the mid-70’s, Charles was promoted to the district offices as the Director of Pupil services until his retirement in 1994.

Charles was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, National Education Association, the Screen Actors Guild, and American Federation of Radio and TV Artists.  He also was a member of the Elks Lodge #808 in Salida, CO.  Charles was also a proud Rotarian and was a charter member of the Lenexa Rotary Club where he served as Past District Governor, Dist. 5710 and Past Charter President of the Lenexa Rotary Club.  He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by the Rotary International.  Charles was also a member of the Lenexa Masonic Lodge #135 and Abdallah Shrine where he was a member of the Joker’s Club.   Charles also served as the consumer member of the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts.

Charles was most proud of being a member of MacGeezers and the Head Wrangler at the “Lazy S Bar Nothin’ Ranch.”

Charles is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wallace Blaine Smith.  He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Patricia Pitney Smith; his children, Mark (RoxAnne) Smith; Nancy (Glen) Stramel; Bruce (Kim) Smith, Carol (Aaron) Garton; 7 grandchildren, Jason Smith; Nathan Smith; Grant (Rachael) Stramel; Todd Stramel; Blair (Bob) Harris; Macauley (Kelsey) Garton; Ally Garton and five great grandchildren.

Charles will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony in Wamego City Cemetery, Wamego, Kansas.  A public celebration of Charles’s life will be held at a later time.

Purple Heart City

On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, President Steve, Lenet Compton and other Lenexa Rotarians were at Lenexa City Hall to recognize Lenexa as a Purple Heart City.  The designation serves as a continual recognition of the 1.6 million Americans who have received a Purple Heart medal, which is awarded to members of the armed forces who are wounded or killed in action. More than 900 cities across the country have taken the step to declare themselves Purple Heart cities.

Global Grant Committee
District 5495 (northern central AZ) is working on a Rotary Foundation Global Water Grant to provide homes on the Navajo Nation with inside running tap water.  There are over 200,000 Native Americans living on 25,000 square miles of land with 40 percent without inside tap water and/or a toilet along with 44 percent of the children in poverty.  It is estimated that the average American home consumes 100 gallons of water per day while the average Navajo home consumes seven (7) gallons per day.  Or putting it another way, today's toilet uses 3.5 to 5 gallons per flush. So, two (2) flushes per day can exceed a day use of water. And what about: Laundry? Bathing? Cooking? Having a glass of water?

Many of these people, our Arizona neighbors, presently have their water delivered into 50 gallon holding barrels in their yards by a water truck and then into the home by small container. Our goal is to install underground cisterns which pump running tap water into or selected homes (need-based) at a cost of $4,500 per home.  The homes are located within a 70-mile radius of Thoreau, New Mexico which is close to Gallup, New Mexico.

The District Global Grant is working with with DigDeep which supplies and installs the total water system at each home. The water system consists of a 1,200 gallon in ground cistern, electric pump, sink, solar panel, battery, filter, heater and gray water leach field.

Help raise funds for Veronica’s Voice as they continue their mission to empower women to be free from the abuse of commercial sex trafficking. Veronica’s Voice will be at the Overland Park Savers at 95th and Nall on Wednesday, August 12th from 4 - 5 pm where they will be accepting drop off donations. Place all items in large garbage bags (30 gallon type is ideal). Please be sure to bring your donations to a Veronica’s Voice volunteer (in a “Thrivent” shirt) so they get credit for these items. Donations will go directly towards the cost of residency at Veronica’s Voice recovery home, Magdalen KC, so women can continue receiving essential services such as trauma counseling, job/life skills counseling, addiction recovery, and much more.

Need a Make-Up?

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:
  • Attend a Club function -- board meeting, committee meeting, project, Youth Exchange
  • Attend a District or International function -- Rotary Youth Exchange, PETs, District Conference
  • Online make-up - Rotary eclub One - go to www.rotaryeclubone.org
  • Attend another Rotary Club meeting
    • While out-of-town for vacation or business
    • In-town around the KC area
    • Download the app "Rotary Club Locator" and find a Rotary club anywhere in the world.
Rotarians can make up for an absence at their club meeting within the same Rotary year.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Make ups also qualify if you attend an eClub meeting.   Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Bill McCollum via email.
