This Friday's Meeting

This Friday our speaker will be Mindi Love with the Johnson County Museum.  Mindi has been with the Johnson County Museum since 2000.

A department of Johnson County government, the Johnson County Museum began as an all-volunteer organization in 1967. The original museum was housed in the former 1927 Greenwood School located in Shawnee, Kansas. The museum’s collections and facility grew over time and now include over 1 million photographs, 15,000 3-D artifacts, and 3,000 cu. ft. of archival material. Significant holdings include the Sun Newspapers photographic morgue from the mid-1980s - 1990s, a bound set of Tom Leather's Squire publications from the early 1960s - 2000s, and material from the Sunflower Ammunition Plant near De Soto. The museum has also built a significant collection documenting the suburban experience in Johnson County.

The museum offers long-term and changing exhibits, a speakers bureau, online resources for research, teacher training, school and public programming, summer camps, and special events. Each year, the museum serves 35,000 visitors onsite and nearly 100,000 people via its online resource materials available at www.JoCoHistory.org.

Donate to The Rotary Foundation

Time is running out to donate to The Rotary Foundation for this year!  Lenexa Rotary has been recognized as a "Star Club" for many years.  To become a Star Club, our club needs to average a donation of $100 per member to The Rotary Foundation.  Members that want to make their annual $100 contribution to The Rotary Foundation can do so by either giving a check to Phil Hammond at our meetings or donate online at www.rotary.org.  Phil will bring an updated list of where each member stands as to their next level of Paul Harris Fellow.

Lenexa Rotary Receives RI Presidential Citation

Lenexa Rotary was recognized as achieving the Rotary International Presidential Citation.  There were only three clubs in District 5710 who received this award.

Each year the President of Rotary International sets specific standards for local clubs to achieve to receive this award.  This year the requirements were:

  • Membership development & retention - Grow by at least one member.  Lenexa Rotary has grown by 4 members this year!
  • Foundation giving - Club members donate to The Rotary Foundation.
  • Online tool adoption - Setting goals and reporting detailed club activities online.
  • Humanitarian service - Lenexa Rotary formed the Lenexa Rotary Community Corp for volunteers to support Lenexa Rotary; have a hands-on project with 75% club participation (ShrimpFest); establish a partnership with a corporate entity; and do a joint project with 5 other Rotary clubs (Coats for Kids)
  • New Generations  - sponsor an Interact Club (Shawnee Mission Northwest); send students to RYLA (we are sending 4 students); participate in Rotary Youth Exchange (we hosted one inbound student and sent two students outbound to Italy and Austria)
  • Public Image - Update club website and social media; and update newsletter

CONGRATULATIONS to Lenexa Rotary for achieving this recognition.  It takes the ENTIRE club to accomplish this!

Rotary Youth Exchange - HOST FAMILY NEEDED!

In August, Lenexa Rotary will be the sponsor of an inbound Rotary Youth Exchange boy from France.  We have found a host family for the 2nd semester of the school year, but we need to find a host family for the 1st semester -- mid August through December.  Please check with your family and friends to see if they would like to be a host family.  For more information contact Greg Peterson or Amy Ruo
