This Friday . . .

Our speaker will be Bill McCollum.  He will be giving a presentation about The Dust Bowl.

The Dust Bowl was the name given to the drought-stricken southern plains region of the United States, which suffered severe dust storms during a drought in the 1930s. As high winds and choking dust swept the region from Texas to Nebraska, people and livestock were killed and crops failed across the entire region. The Dust Bowl intensified the crushing economic impacts of the Great Depression and drove many farming families on a desperate migration in search of work and better living conditions.

Rotary Matters
Human Trafficking "Rotary Cares Kits"

**Help Needed**

As you know we are part of a District Grant that will provide "Rotary Cares Kits" to 114 human trafficking victims . The kits will be provided to district support groups for distribution.

On January 6 & 13,  each Rotarian should bring to our meeting:

- Tube of tooth paste (standard size) and/or
- Toothbrush

We are hoping that by soliciting personal hygiene donations from members of our participating clubs (Lenexa, CAAHT, Lawrence, Manhattan, Topeka South, and Leawood) we may be be able to provide the kits to more than 114 victims. The Dollar Store was mentioned by one of our grant team members as a good place to find these items. Of course if you have new toothpaste tubes and  toothbrushes stockpiled, that will work also!

Steve Nettles is the person in our club heading this effort.  He hopes that each member can contribute one set of the requested items each week. The picture above describes the items that will be in each kit. Steve will update us weekly on the next items that will be requested.

Thanks for your participation!

Ben Harber

Occupation: I have spent my career serving in business roles in the healthcare industry with Humana, General Electric Reinsurance, DaVita Dialysis, Saint Luke’s Health System and now serve as a Vice President of B.E. Smith. Currently, I manage a team of ~500 Interim Leaders that are stationed to manage hospitals (C-Suite to Director roles) across the Country during vacancies – the average assignment lasts a little over six months.

Tell us about yourself: I am the youngest of five and the dog dad to Hannah (5 years) and Griffy (7 months) both Bernese Mountain Dogs,. I am life-long Lenexa resident. My home was built on the same lot where I grew up. Originally, the land was Monticello Township later to become a part of Lenexa. I went to Meadow Lane Elementary, Oregon Trail Junior High and graduated from Olathe North in 1989. I went to Rockhurst University for both undergrad and MBA. I feel blessed to have grown up and live a fulfilling life in our wonderful area.

When did you join Rotary:   March 18, 2018

Why did you join Rotary: I knew Don Horine, Jason Leib and Jerry Harper. The three of them served as quite the calling card for a group of people of purpose and action. When my travel schedule for work started to dial down in 2016, I wanted to become more involved in my community and joining Rotary was a longtime goal of mine.

What Rotary offices have you held: New Rotarian of the Year (2018-19), Vice President (2020- 21), President-Elect (2021-22) and President (2022-23)

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project? There’s too many. But here’s a few: 1) 2020 ShrimpFest when Fred Spears showed me the “correct way” to arrange for Silent Auction items for display. 2) 2021 Peace Pole Event and all of the training and preparation that went into it. 3) 2022-23 Officers Induction when we had live music at the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park event.

When you are not working, how do you spend your time? I regularly volunteer at Harvesters, Wayside Waifs and Operation Breakthrough.
