Lenexa Rotary mourns the death of long-time member, Alan Uhl.  Below is the obituary which includes service time.

 

 

Alan Uhl, 91, of Gardner, KS died July 27, 2019 at Meadowbrook Long-term Care. 

 

Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2019, at Salem Lutheran Church, 9143 Haskins, Lenexa, KS, 66215.  Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with burial then taking place in Lenexa Cemetery.

Alan was born in Haddonfield, NJ on May 14, 1928, the younger son of Victor L. and Anne D. Uhl.  His family moved to the northern Philadelphia suburb of Glenside, PA when he was 5.  Alan always considered Glenside to be his hometown.  Alan was educated in the Cheltenham Township, PA public schools and was a proud alumnus of Penn State where he was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity. He was a member of the Penn State Club of Kansas City.   He served in the U.S. Army in Korea.  Alan and Sara “Sally” Hudson were married on Nov. 3, 1956 and were together nearly 47 years until her death in 2003.  They were the parents of Victor C. Uhl and Carla Uhl-Melvin.  Alan and Sally had 4 grandsons, Timothy and Eric Lewis; Joseph and George Uhl; his nieces, Nancy Kennedy and Amy Ahlers and daughter in law, Sherry Barnes.  He is also survived by his “niece” Martha Negley, daughter of his lifelong best friend of 77 years, the late George H. Negley.   He was also preceded in death by his son, Victor and brother, Richard. 

 

Alan and Sally moved to Kansas in 1962 and luckily located in Lenexa.  Alan spent most of his working in the life and health insurance industry and attained the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter, CLU.  Over the years Alan was involved in many activities.  Six years on the Lenexa City Council (1973-79) with service on the Lenexa Planning Commission before and after the council terms.  He was council president for a time and planning commission chairman during his first time on that board.  He was a long-time member of the Lenexa Rotary Club of which he was a past president and served as president of the Lenexa Historical Society.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW.  Alan was involved in outdoor cooking and barbeque for most of his life and was a founding director and lifetime member of the Kansas City Barbeque Society, KCBS. In 1982, Alan cofounded The Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle, one of the premier events of its kind in the United States.  This was one of Alan’s proudest accomplishments.  Cooking together as a team, “The Buffalo Chips”, Sally and Alan were Grand Champions of the contest in 1988. Alan lived a long and, he hoped, useful life.  He will be greatly missed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:

Rotarians can make up for an absence at their club meeting within the same Rotary year.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Make ups also qualify if you attend an eClub meeting.   Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Bill McCollum via email.
