Our speaker will be Walt Schley.  He will be speaking to us about Purple Heart Cities.

The Purple Heart is the country’s oldest military decoration, having had its start as the Badge of Military Merit, which was established by Gen. George Washington, then commander of the Continental Army. It is a prestigious medal awarded to any member of the armed forces who has been wounded or lost under combat conditions. The Military Order of the Purple Heart, which was chartered by Congress as a veterans’ organization whose members have received the medal, presides over the Purple Heart City designation.

Awareness & Action Conference

On March 6th, DG Jason Leib welcomed over 100 attendees to the Leawood and Lenexa Rotary Club's first ever Human Trafficking Awareness and Action Conference.

Moms, law enforcement officers, government officials, Rotarians and the concerned public came to learn how they can help stop human trafficking.  This became a regional conference with people driving in from as far away as western Kansas, Manhattan, Topeka and St. Louis to name a few.

Kansas Attorney General, Derek Schmidt, exhibitors and workshop presenters shared their frontline, in-depth knowledge of the problem, the challenges and hope for the future.

The positive feedback from attendees and presenters leads the organizers to believe another conference might be in the future.

Volunteer Opportunity
A message from Shawnee Rotary

One of the beneficiaries of our 2019 Taste of Shawnee was Sleep in Heavenly Peace.  This organization provides bunk beds to families in need.  One of its missions is that no child goes to sleep without a bed.  The beds go to families on the Kansas side from KCK to Baldwin City.

We will have a Build Day on March 28th at Heartland Seating on Johnson Drive in Shawnee.  We will need between 60-100 volunteers!  We will build between 10-15 beds.  They provide materials and power tools, etc.  Rotarians, Interact members, families, kids 10 and older that can work independently and friends are welcome.

Contact Joni Pflumm if you are interested in helping out.
RYLA-Deadline FRIDAY

Do you know a high school junior or senior who has what it takes to become a dynamic leader and change themselves and the world?

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where high school junior and seniors develop skills as a leader while having fun and making connections.

District 5710 puts on RYLA each year at the University of Kansas.  This year it will be held May 31-June.  If you know anyone who would be interested, please contact Lenexa Rotarian Sarah Donohoe

What are you having?
Need a Make-Up?

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:
  • Attend a Club function -- board meeting, committee meeting, project, Youth Exchange
  • Attend a District or International function -- Rotary Youth Exchange, PETs, District Conference
  • Online make-up - Rotary eclub One - go to www.rotaryeclubone.org
  • Attend another Rotary Club meeting
    • While out-of-town for vacation or business
    • In-town around the KC area
    • Download the app "Rotary Club Locator" and find a Rotary club anywhere in the world.
Rotarians can make up for an absence at their club meeting within the same Rotary year.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Make ups also qualify if you attend an eClub meeting.   Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Bill McCollum via email.
