This Friday our our speaker will be Mark Naster from Habitat for Humanity. As a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that builds with people in need regardless of race or religion, they welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds. They have more than 1,400 local affiliates in the US and more than 70 national organizations around the world. Together they have helped more than 1 million famlies - representing 5 million people - improve their living conditions since their founding in 1976.
Rotary Day for PolioPlus
This past Tuesday was the first joint Rotary Day for PolioPlus. The Rotary Clubs of Lenexa, Shawnee, Johnson County and Western Johnson County organized this event and it was a great success.
The speaker was Dr. Priti Lakhani who is a healthcare executive for Cerner's Physician Alignment Organization. Dr. Lakhani gave a presentation about maternal health care in Africa. Additionally, there was a presentation about PolioPlus given by Pete Heaven, whose father had polio.
There were 57 people in attendance and $1,545 was raised for PolioPlus! PDG Kevin Tubbesing was also there selling Rotary t-shirts in which $130 of the sales went to PolioPlus. Total raised for the night was $1,655.
Shawnee Mission College Clinic
Once again this year, Lenexa Rotarians will be helping at the Shawnee Mission Clinic. Jim Blaufuss is coordinating this project. We usually distribute water to booths and also help with crowd control before the doors open. Additionally, Lenexa Rotary will have a booth to promote our Wes Fry 4 Way Test Speech Contest. Lenexa Fire Safety Trailer
Ashley Sherard has been coordinating with the Lenexa Fire Department the dates when we will be assisting them with the Fire Safety Trailer. The dates are: October 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 21. There are two shifts: 9:00-11:30 am & 11:30-2:00 p.m. A list of schools and dates are on the Lenexa Rotary website. Ashley said there will be a training course for those who are not yet trained or need a refresher. Contact Ashley for more information.
Stop Hunger Now - Beer Can Collection
We are again having a "beer can collection" to raise money for Stop Hunger Now. It was a huge success and Lenexa Rotary along with the SMNW Interact Club packaged meals that were then sent Nepal to feed people recovering from a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.
Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears has beer cans available for members who need one. Please fill them up with coins and/or a check and return them to Fred Spears. Fred says that a 12 oz. can will hold approximately: $70 in quarters, $81 in dimes, or $21 in nickels -- or you can just write a check! Money will be collected until December 4th. We plan on again packaging meals with the SMNW Interact sometime this winter.
Dictionary Project
Craig Denny is organizing the Dictionary Project. When Craig receives the dictionaries, he will let us know and then he will need people to put stickers in the front of all the dictionaries. He is scheduling with elementary schools in Lenexa when Rotarians can deliver the dictionaries to the schools. More information to come.

During the meeting if you think of some thing that you want to share, feel free to jot it down on the YPad -- a random thought, a suggestion, a compliment, an idea for a speaker, a joke, etc. Each week President Amy will pick up the YPads and report any messages in the newsletter and at the following meeting.
Club members from the Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club gave a presentation about their trip to Guatemala this past summer. Greg Peterson, Rick Morton and Janet Morton accompanied the Interact on the trip.
