Desserts:  Each member is REQUIRED to bring at least two (2) desserts to be served at ShrimpFest.  The desserts need to be dropped off after 12:00 NOON the day of the event.  Desserts to bring include:  pies, cakes/cupcakes, brownies, cookies.  Most requested desserts are:  carrot cake, red velvet, cherry pie, cream pies.  Gluten-Free desserts are also encouraged -- we get a lot of requests for gluten-free desserts.  Some Gluten-Free desserts include Rice Krispie Treats.  Also there are desserts marked "gluten-free" in the bakery section.

Room set-up:  Table & Chairs.  We have a new company supplying the tables and chairs, however, we will need to have people at the Lenexa Community Center on the afternoon of the event helping to set up tables and chairs and we will need to break down the tables and chairs at the end of the night.  The more people we have the faster it will get done.  Please see Steve Nettles

SMNW Interact Club

The Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club is up and running!  Greg Peterson has had meetings with the administration at SMNW and the new teacher sponsor, Kathy Clark.  They will be meeting every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. in Room 105.

This past Wednesday they met and had about 15 students in attendance.  They are talking about possible projects AND some of them will be helping at ShrimpFest this Friday!

*****As we have done in the past, we want to give the Interact Club members past issues of The Rotarian magazine.  Please bring in your copies and put on the sign-in table or give to Greg Peterson or Amy Ruo.

Occupation (or former): Director of Community Relations was my last position

Tell us about your family:   Married to Jim.  I have two children.  Andy and his wife Liz live in Oklahoma with their three children.  Susan and her husband Alex live in Colorado with their two girls.

When did you join Rotary:  1996.  Greg Peterson invited me

Why did you join Rotary:  I love to be involved in the goals of Rotary.  Not only is it good for our own community, but for the world as well.

What Rotary offices have you held:   I have been Vice President, President Elect and President.  Currently I am the Membership Chair

What is your favorite Rotary memory or project?

Many of the projects are memorable, but I specifically remember one year when we volunteered with Johnson County Christmas Bureau.  When we opened the shop for the first time that year, there were no shopping carts.  Some over zealous volunteers “borrowed” carts from the office supply next door.  It became known to those of us that year as the War with Office Depot.  The Lenexa Rotary Club came to the rescue.  Jim Blaufuss found legitimate carts and found a way to transport them to our location.  Other members soothed the manager of Office Depot while returning his carts, and everyone pitched in to get the jittery day that began poorly to end well.

When you are not working, how do you spend your time?   I enjoy playing bridge, reading and travel.

RYLA - June 4-8

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

University of Kansas, Lawrence
June 4-8, 2023

**Please pass along this information to any high school student that would be interested**

There are several past participants of this program that stated their experience was life-changing and made them more aware of their capabilities. It is common to see a student become emotional when talking about their experience with RYLA. For many students, this is their first exposure to Rotary and what we, as Rotarians, can accomplish. The projects and exercises in this five-day camp are designed to get the students to think differently about certain situations and develop their own solutions with fellow students they may have not met before attending the camp. Many students worldwide, who have attended RYLA, have continued on to become members of an Interact, Rotaract, and eventually a Rotary club.

The University of Kansas in Lawrence will once again host District 5710's Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA).
