Our speaker this Friday will be Melanie Arroyo. Melanie was elected to serve as a Ward 3 council member in November 2021, making her the first Latina to join the Lenexa City Council.
Melanie is a graduate of Shawnee Mission Schools and graduated from the University of Saint Mary in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and Psychology. She continued her education at Emporia State University where she graduated with a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling and a master’s degree in Art Therapy.
Currently, Melanie works as a clinical counselor and art therapist, and is the owner of her private practice. She has experience working with children and adults from a range of cultural backgrounds, disabilities and diverse identities.
As a mental health professional trained in trauma informed care and cultural humility, Melanie brings a unique perspective and listening ear to City Council and to the residents of Ward 3.

Jennifer Montgomery has been selected as a 2021 Peace Fellow. Montgomery, who was chosen from a pool of global candidates, will take part in the Professional Certificate program at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda She will spend several months next fall at the Rotary Peace Center at Makerere University where she will study negotiation, facilitation, mediation and conflict transformation. This will be followed by a remote nine-month independent work period which will culminate with a return trip to Uganda in September of 2022 for a one-week Capstone session. As a Peace Fellow, she hopes to deepen her understanding of conflict resolution and make a lasting contribution to peace and civil discourse in communities in Kansas and across the globe.”
