Our speaker this Friday will be Nicole Asquith, the Community Engagement Coordinator with Midwest Transplant Network.

Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) has been connecting lives in Kansas and western Missouri since 1973. As a federally certified, not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO), they work with organ, eye, and tissue donors, their families, hospitals, and other professional partners to extend legacies, provide hope and give life. Together with partners and volunteers (“Ambassadors”), they are dedicated to increasing awareness and education about the need for organ, eye and tissue donation.

Cans for Kids
Cans for Kids Fundraiser

The proceeds of this year's Beer Can Fundraiser will be given to KVC Health Systems to provide school supplies to some of the 10,000 local foster children.  It will provide supplies to the children that the classes require and clothing where there is a need.  You may have heard of this on KMBC Channel 9 News.

For every $25 contributed, a child will receive all the school supplies they need.  For $50 they will receive the school supplies and can go shopping for clothing.  We will be conducting this fundraiser until August 10.

Instructions:
  1. You will be receiving a full can of beer (or soda if you prefer)
  2. Drink the beer/soda.  Or use the beer for Beer Can Chicken or other recipe should you prefer.
  3. Rinse the can of any residue - this is important!
  4. Fill it with money - this is most important.  If you use quarters or dimes that is about $75.  Providing a check or folding money is acceptable as we are turning into a cashless society.  Checks should be made out to Lenexa Rotary Foundation.
  5. Return the can to Fred Spears with your name on it and he will get a receipt to you, if you wish.
  6. Then Fred will give you another can to either fill and contribute or just drink.  Just remember the instructions on a shampoo bottle:  Wash, rinse, repeat.  The same here, except: drink, wash, rinse, fill with money!
  7. I am providing a soda option this year for those members who do not choose to drink beer.
Peace Poles
THANK YOU to everyone who came out to help with the Peace Pole ceremony and a big THANK YOU to Ben Harber for organizing this event along with the City of Lenexa.  It was a beautiful night and everything went perfectly.  Here are some photos of the winning Peace Poles.

Best of Show - John & Lynette Huntsinger
Amateur artists from north central Kansas. John makes comfort birds out of exotic and ordinary woods. Each bird is unique, and the recipients of the birds are prayed for. John and Lynette's pole includes hand-carved lettering and a dove on top of the pole.

1st Place - Patty Jaksa Brundage
A retired designer and lettering artist at Hallmark Cards. Since retiring, she continues to enjoy creating art, gardening and spending time with her husband and dog. Her design is of a tree with carved birds and leaves made from recycled soda cans.

2nd Place - Karen Skillett
Worked for 32 years at Hallmark Cards in a variety of design departments.  Now she is a docent and museum guide for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.  Her pole, entitled "Find Your Place of Peace" shows swimming koi, which are known for their calming and meditative properties.

3rd Place - Marci Blank
A fiber artist, began knitting when she was in third grade. Being surrounded by fiber and those who shared her passion, she was hooked.  Marci turned her love for fiber into a full-time profession.  She created knitted and crocheted garments and died yarns and fibers. Marci's pole is called "Knit the World Together"

Honorable Mention - Eugenia Oritz
A visionary, multimedia artist who layers mixed media materials and paint to produce vibrant immersive art that harmonizes with the environment. Eugenia incorporates hexagons and honeycombs in her art as they are the building blocks of life and are found throughout nature including inside ourselves.

Best Children's Entry - Cora Carlson (not pictured)
A 4th grader at Rushton Elementary School.  She loves animals, art, sports and reading.  Her pole includes animals and pets to help people feel better and happier.

Rotary Youth Exchange
School Year 2024-2025

Lenexa Rotary will be welcoming a new Rotary Youth Exchange Student for the coming school year - Emilia (Emi) Fernanda Rodriguez Kaempfe from Chile.  She will be arriving August 6, 2024.

We have one host family and are still looking for two (2) more host families for the school year.  Please seriously consider being a host family and ask your family and friends if they would like to be a part of this wonderful experience.

Contact Ben Harber with questions.
